Adjectiveelectoral (comparative more electoral, superlative most electoral) Derived termsSpanishAdjectiveelectoral m. and f. (plural electorales) From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An election is a formal decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold public office. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy operates since the 17th century. Elections may fill offices in the legislature, sometimes in the executive and judiciary, and for regional and local government. This process is also used in many other private and business organizations, from clubs to voluntary associations and corporations. The universal use of elections as a tool for selecting representatives in modern democracies is in contrast with the practice in the democratic archetype, ancient Athens. Elections were considered an oligarchic institution and most political offices were filled using sortition, also known as allotment, by which officeholders were chosen by lot. Electoral reform describes the process of introducing fair electoral systems where they are not in place, or improving the fairness or effectiveness of existing systems. Psephology is the study of results and other statistics relating to elections (especially with a view to predicting future results). To elect means "to choose or make a decision" (For example, in contract law, if one party breaches the agreement, the other party may "elect" whether to continue or repudiate the contract), and so sometimes other forms of ballot such as the referendum are referred to as elections, especially in the United States. Q. Also: Who is appointed to cast the electoral vote? How many electoral votes does a president need to win? What does the electoral vote mean? Asked by Ellen - Thu Nov 19 10:57:25 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Presidential electors are selected on a state-by-state basis, as determined by the laws of each state. Each state currently uses its statewide popular vote on Election Day to appoint electors. Although ballots list the names of the presidential candidates, voters within the 50 states and Washington, D.C. actually choose electors for their state when they vote for President and Vice President. These presidential electors in turn cast electoral votes for those two offices. Even though the aggregate national popular vote is calculated by state officials and media organizations, the national popular vote is not the basis for electing a President or Vice President. A candidate must receive an absolute majority of electoral votes (currently 270) [cont.] Answered by Blzefier - Thu Nov 19 11:13:15 2009 Have the electoral college numbers ever been recalculated based on shifts in the population? Q. I know most states are winner take all for electoral votes for president, but some states allow the electoral votes to be split between candidates based on geography (congressional districts).
