An encyclopedia (also spelled encyclopaedia or encyclopædia) is a comprehensive written compendium that holds information from either all branches of knowledge or a particular branch of knowledge. Encyclopedias are divided into articles with one article on each subject covered. The articles on subjects in an encyclopedia are usually accessed alphabetically by article name and can be contained in one volume or many volumes, depending on the amount of material included.

Indeed, the purpose of an encyclopedia is to collect knowledge disseminated around the globe; to set forth its general system to the men with whom we live, and transmit it to those who will come after us, so that the work of preceding centuries will not become useless to the centuries to come; and so that our offspring, becoming better instructed, will at the same time become more virtuous and happy, and that we should not die without having rendered a service to the human race in the future years to come.

What happened to the print-based encyclopedia industry?
Q. What happened to the print-based encyclopedia industry when PC CD-ROMs and now the internet (Wikipedia) rose to prominence? Encyclopedia Britannica still has an online presence, but do salesman still sell the 30 volume set? Do only schools and libariries buy them now? Are Collier's and the World Book still alive? Is it an undustry that has blossomed with the PC or suffered?

A. The encyclopedia industry must go online or die. Paper books will be obsolete and collector items in our lifetime.

How do I remove an article from Encyclopedia Dramatica?
Q. A page on Encyclopedia Dramatica includes personal information and libel against me, but the Wiki has no clear-cut method of getting a possibly inappropriate article removed. How do I get in touch with Encyclopedia Dramatica staff to get an article removed?

A. Create and account and at the top of the page it has a place where you can edit the article. Just take out the part where it has personal information.
