What is the best technique for hill starts at stop signs on a hill with people in front of you?
Q. I know the handbrake method but I can't do it every 5 seconds when traffic moves and if I hold the clutch out too long I might damage the clutch's lifespan. Things to consider I just got a manual car and have had it for just 5 days. I just stalled on a hill stop sign trying to not do the handbrake method. I know practice helps but any tips for a beginner?
Asked by Dave - Wed May 26 03:36:00 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Why can't you do the handbrake method every 5 seconds? The rule of thumb is that if you have time to put the handbrake on, then you do so. Balancing on the clutch requires experience, which will come, and if you keep overdoing it you will indeed wear the clutch. With more experience you will come to be able to judge which is most appropriate, in the meantime use the brake.

How do you perform the handbrake hill start method?
Q. I just got a manual car and I have a hard time with hill starts. I seem to struggle with finding the biting point quickly without stalling, any advice on best ways of practicing. I have tried going out and utilizing a hill, does steepness matter? Is this normal to be struggling in 5 days time?

A. release the clutch give it a little gas till you fell it start to pull then release the brake and clutch and apply more gas to the accelerator. Keep trying you will get the feel of it and wont even be thinking about it soon. try it on a flat surface to get use to the muscle movement/memorization (thats what i did with my sister and she picked it up right away) she would just get nervous and doing it on flat ground helped her alot. hope it helps. good luck

How do you build a shed into a hill?
Q. I have a steep hill in my backyard. If I can excavate a little into it, I would like to build a 12'x12' shed recessed into the hill. What should I know when building in this environment? Q. I don't understand the concept of hill starting with manual cars. I've heard to use a parking break, but everything I've read about hill starting involving a parking break doesn't tell me WHEN to take the parking break off?? Would I do that after I've shifted into first?? HELP!

A. Ok I'll try to answer your question in few steps as simply as possible: 1. Come to a complete stop 2. Shift into neutral 3. Pull the handbrake up 4. Shift into a first gear 5. With the handbrake on try starting normally as you would've if the ground was leveled 6. You will feel (notice) that the car is trying to move, but handbrake is not letting the car go forward (hood will maybe go up, depends on what car you drive) 7. Release the handbrake and the car will start moving with not rolling back (you are not going to hit the car even if the car is 5 inches behind you and you're driving in San Francisco:) ) hope this helps P.S. with the practice and experience you will be able to manage to start on a hill without using the e-brake, just a… [cont.]

If the 49ers started Shaun Hill from the start of the season?
Q. Could the 49ers have been contenders this season? I still can't believe O'Sullivan got the starting job over this guy. Hill has played consistently good in the games hes started dating back towards the end of last season.

A. hell yeah!! it would've been a fight for the nfc west against the cardinals. You can blame marrtz for that retarded decision for jto. I heard he was going for a more aerial game like back then with no.16. Obviously that flopped!! Hill should've been in from the beginning cuz he was supposed to be next in line after alex smith. We would've had way less interceptions and fumbles to lose those games. When singletary arrived that helped too cuz now they're playin way more aggressive, than they were with that suit Nolan, who by the way tried to challenge that a field goal kick was good...stupid!

Does parking your car on a hill do soething to your transmission?
Q. I have been told if I park car on hill that it does something to the transmission. Is this true?
Asked by rose_loves_bingo - Tue May 27 22:13:52 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. well, yes, to a degree. If you stand on a steep hill, don't your legs get tired just standing? Of course they do...gravity is trying to pull you down, and you have to resist, so you experience fatique, more so than flat ground - this fatique also happens in cars, as the transmission has to rest it's gears on something when in the park mode, and I think it's a fork inside. If you constantly park on a steep hill, and don't use the parking brake, it will eventually wear that fork out, or the part it engages. It may take years, but it will happen eventually, given enough pressure on it. Sometimes car have a hard time coming out of park after being on a steep hill, too. Another reason NOT to do it. Although you CAN park it facing downhill,… [cont.]

What does it mean to plant squash in a hill?
Q. The zucchini package says to plant my squash in a hill. What does this mean? Do i have to raise the soil (or dump a bunch on to make a hill?). Or do i just plant them all next to each other? Won't they get crowded and develop fungus easier if i do that?
Asked by earthchick - Wed Jun 13 15:19:48 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The "hill" method is almost always used by the home gardener for squash. It means to prepare a small area of your garden into small hills. Maybe 15-18 inches in diameter of well tilled soil. Make them about 3-4 ft. apart. Then plant 5-6 seeds in each hill. When they are about 2" tall thin them to 3 plants per hill. No they won't get fungus from being planted that way.

How do I get kudzu to start growing up the hill next to my house?
Q. I just moved into a house with a ugly dirt hill going straight up on the side of it. I worry about erosion with large trees near the edge (don't need a caved in roof) and a ugly yard. With alot of kudzu growing wild around here, thought I could get some started to cover the ugliness and help the erosion. Do I just cut some of it off and stick it in the ground, or do I need to dig it up at the root? Do I start it at the bottom of the hill or at the top?

A. Please take this and Pobept's advice,,,DON'T Not only will it take over the hill, but everything else, if unchecked. besides that it emits a really offensive smell. I live in central FL, and pull out all the Kudzu I see, as well as asparagus fern etc. There are so many other vine type plants you might actually plant, but I almost promise they will become as out of control,,,IE: "Potato Vine" By the way,,KUDZU will never gain a strong enough ROOT system to help much with erosion. It's roots may be as strong as the weed is prolific, but they are basically FINE, grow close to the surface, and spread to great distances. Without knowing the height of the hill, its grade, closeness to your house, your location, your weather, [cont.]

How to properly drive down a steep hill with a standard transmission?
Q. I have a 1990 Geo Tracker 4x4 standard 5 gear. And I wanted to know the proper way of driving down a steep hill and at the same time not burning out the brakes. Thank You!
Asked by votteoman_24 - Fri Aug 22 02:53:55 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I think the general (and safe) answer is to downgear to the same position you'd use if you are going up that hill. If a hill is so steep you would use the second gear up, so that's the gear you should use to go down. And remember to always get your foot off the accelerator. The engine will slow you down to a safe speed.

A. Momentum. A chain-gear is used to pull the roller coaster the rest of the way up the track once gravity brings it to a stop. Velocity is what you feel with every fall and turn. (Velocity is speed and direction.)

Q. The USDA plant hardiness zone is 7. Parts of the hill are shaded by large trees at the top, and other parts are in the sun for most of the day. What would be good to plant to keep dirt on a hill from washing away?
Q. I have a bald patch of dirt in my yard on a hill that washes down onto my sidewalk when it rains. This dirt patch is between a chain-link fence and a hedge, so it doesn't get a lot of sun. The dirt is not very good quality. Any ideas of fast-growing plants or other ways I can make this dirt to stay put?
Asked by warehaus - Mon Mar 6 00:37:19 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Just plain old grass would probably work best. I think Timothy seed is what you need to get. Also, put a bale of straw or something sold on the uphill side of the dirt patch so the seeds won't get washed away. Spread straw on the seeds too... not sure what that accomplishes, but that's what everyone does when they sow grass. I think it's to protect the seeds from too much sunlight or getting eaten by birds.

How can I get rid of tumble weeds growing on backyard hill?
Q. I live in Southern Cali; my backyard has a hill with clay dirt and every year around this time tumble weeds and other types of weeds start to grow rapidly. By spring, I have tall weeds and dead tumble weeds(which are hard to pull out). What can I do now to prevent them from coming back?

A. You realize you have maybe 30 years worth of viable seed in the soil now. Each plant throws hundreds of thousands of seeds each with a slightly different life span. The solution is to get something growing on the hill that will out compete the tumbleweed. I suspect it will be some type of grass with the fibrous root system and soil shading ability. Ice plant is another thought. You don't have water to spare? Well, there are preemergent weed killers than can be applied to the soil that retard germinated weed seed from making it to the soil surface. Contact your Cooperative Extension Agent in your county (phone book blue pages, state, county, state university or ?? varies with location...or do a web search California Cooperative… [cont.]
