The United Mexican States (Spanish: Estados Unidos Mexicanos (help·info)), commonly known as Mexico (English: /ˈmɛksɪkoʊ/) (Spanish: México (help·info) [ˈmexiko]), is a federal constitutional republic in North America. It is bordered on the north by the United States; on the south and west by the Pacific Ocean; on the southeast by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea; and on the east by the Gulf of Mexico. Covering almost 2 million square kilometres, Mexico is the fifth-largest country in the Americas by total area and the 14th largest independent nation in the world. With an estimated population of 109 million, it is the 11th most populous country. Mexico is a federation comprising thirty-one states and a Federal District, the capital city. In Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica many cultures matured into advanced civilizations such as the Olmec, the Toltec, the Teotihuacan, the Maya and the Aztec before the first contact with Europeans. In 1521, Spain created the New Spain which would eventually become Mexico as the colony gained independence in 1821. The post-independence period was characterized by economic instability, territorial secession and civil war, including foreign intervention, two empires and two long domestic dictatorships. The latter led to the Mexican Revolution in 1910, which culminated with the promulgation of the 1917 Constitution and the emergence of the country's current political system. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time that an opposition party won the presidency from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (Spanish: Partido Revolucionario Institucional, PRI). As a regional power and the only Latin American member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) since 1994, Mexico is firmly established as an upper middle-income country, considered as a newly industrialized country and has the 11th largest economy in the world by GDP by purchasing power parity, and also the largest GDP per capita in Latin America according to the International Monetary Fund. The economy is strongly linked to those of its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners. Despite being considered an emerging power, the uneven income distribution and the increase in drug-related violence are issues of concern. From Wikipedia under the

Mexico has urged the US to alter its plans for expanded fences along their shared border, saying they would damage the environment and harm wildlife. The fences threaten unique ecosystems, Mexican environment officials warned. Mexico was ready to file a complaint with the International Court of Justice over the matter if the US did not respond, the environment minister said. The planned barriers aim to curb illegal immigration, a highly divisive and controversial issue in the US. The fences, planned along a possible 700 miles (1,125km) of the border, are to be equipped with hi-tech surveillance equipment, including sensors and strong lights. "The eventual construction of this barrier would place at risk the various ecosystems… [cont.] Asked by alberto's Parents - Tue Jul 31 20:32:14 2007 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments A. Their abuse of our eco system really bothers me a lot. Have you seen the videos and such? I was so appalled at the sight, they were saying how much it stank! I don't think they have any regard for our eco system. I'd be happy to bring in the photos and videos as evidence for the Mexican government! This may be my pet peeve! Answered by Ms.L.A. - Tue Jul 31 22:36:34 2007 How would an American obtain a work permit in Mexico City? Q. My sister may move to Mexico City. She speaks some Spanish. Has good experience with office work. Would she apply before she moves to Mexico or once she is in Mexico? Also, do you think she will be able to find employment? Asked by nanigrl26 - Mon Jan 28 13:37:51 2008 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments A. She would need to get a work permit with an FM3visa...very difficult to get. She must find an empoyer who will write a letter to immigrtion stating he is giving her a job and cannot find a Mexican national to fill this job. This usually involves very highy tecnical work requiring highly skilled workers. He must sponser her work visa and the work visa is good only as long as she holds that job. Nobody is going to do this for an office worker.Wages are extremely low. It is not at all practical for a young Ameican to move to Mexico to work and make a living. She can check with the nearest Mexican consult toconfirm this info. See list below. Buying an old school or other interesting building in a downtown location is good. However - are you eligible for being a permanent resident in Canada? You should check that out first. Go to and click on one of the various links there relating to doing business in Canada and also visitors to Canada.
