A primary school (from French école primaire) is an institution where children receive the first stage of compulsory education known as primary or elementary education. Primary school is the preferred term in the United Kingdom and many Commonwealth Nations, and in most publications of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In some countries, and especially in North America, the term elementary school is preferred. Children generally attend primary school from around the age of four or five until the age of eleven or twelve.

Australia

Main article: Education in Australia

In Australia, Primary School is generally for children aged 5–12. In South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland grade 7 is part of primary school; in other states it forms part of secondary education. In certain year groups, students in all schools take part in the National Assessment Programme (NAP). The year levels:

Grade Age NAP Prep 5-6 N 1 6-7 N 2 7-8 N 3 8-9 Y 4 9-10 N 5 10-11 Y 6 11-12 N 7 12-13 Y

Only in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia the seventh year of education is considered part of "primary shool". The rest of Australia considers "primary school" only from years one through six.

After primary school, students move on to high school.

what date in August do children start Primary School?
Q. Hi my 4 year old school is starting Primary in West Dunbartonshire and i believe it is in August although someonesaid it could be early september. Anyway i am booking us a few days away to Paris which is for either 14th Aug to 17th Aug or 21st Aug to 24th Aug. Obviously i dont want to interrupt my childs school so does anyone know when the kids start.

A. It looks like the start date is 19th August. To be certain phone the school and ask - they will know all the dates for the next couple of years. There may be a difference between primary and secondary, and there may be 'phased entries' for reception classes and year1. The website below is handy.

What Qualifications are Required to become a Primary School Teacher And What's Involved?
Q. I wish to become a primary school teacher in Australia but I am not sure what qualifications I need to be able to teach. There is one other problem, to maintain my income I am going to continue working during the day and therefore either go to night school or learn by correspondence distance education. Can anyone help??

A. You need to do a primary education degree, which is 4 years at University. Alternatively, you can undertake a bachelors degree in anything, and then study for a diploma of education, which is also 4 years. However, to get qualified you do need to undertake teaching rounds, which are usually one day a week for the duration of the semester to begin with, or a two-week lump sum I think, depending on the Uni, so you may have to reduce your hours at work to fit in with the timetable (I think its usually fridays?) If you need to work and study, perhaps doing an Arts degree (10-12 hours contact per week for 3 years) and then a dip. ed part time (1.5-2 years, usually about 10 hours a week also) may be a better option than a Bachelor of Education, [cont.]

A. Try asking the careers adviser at school. You should have one and he/she should be able to help you. Otherwise maybe child physchology or development?
